Canary Speech announced today the launch of Canary Ambient, an API-first solution designed for healthcare and contact centers, which offers a first-of-its-kind, real-time voice analysis during clinical conversations.

With this deployment of Canary Speech's technology, an API acts as an interface between the audio capture device (typically a physician's tablet or a smartphone) and web services from Canary. The API acts like a funnel or a tube that's feeding the platform. "Canary is at the forefront, and Ambient is the next generation of this capability," Henry O’Connell, CEO of Canary Speech, shared with TechBuzz.

"This is all happening in milliseconds," he added, explaining how AI allows Canary to perform its functions extremely quickly and in the background. "We're doing all these things using AI—diarization, speaker identification, sample, registry—from two individual speakers. We process it all in milliseconds and update it in milliseconds. It is all automated. It is happening in the background within the first 40 seconds of the conversation between the physician and the patient. It is totally non-invasive and independent. AI drives and manages all of it. No one else is doing this in the world, truthfully."

Canary Ambient's clinical decision support software enables actionable insights into patient-clinician dialogues by tracking speech patterns, and delivering immediate, real-time assessments of cognitive and behavioral health conditions of the patient.

With its advanced voice processing capabilities, Canary Ambient brings unobtrusive and impactful insights, helping organizations identify potential at-risk individuals who would benefit from further evaluation, improving overall communication and efficiency of patient care—all done unobtrusively while listening in the background.

Nate Blaylock, CTO, Canary Speech

“Canary Speech’s clinical ambient listening allows for seamless vocal biomarker analysis that captures the natural interaction between a clinician and their patient with no additional prompting required,” said Nate Blaylock, CTO of Canary Speech, based in San Antonio. “This technology supports the clinician in identifying patients who may benefit from additional screening."

“We are thrilled to offer Canary Ambient, which will allow many more organizations to frictionlessly integrate vocal biomarker analysis into existing workflows, improving patient care and customer service,” said O’Connell.

He continued, "We have the right team, right now, using advanced tools and orchestrating it to all come together in a seamless solution for healthcare." With Canary Ambient, a lot of things have come together from a technology standpoint that are allowing us to make advancements in healthcare that even three years ago were unthinkable. Even two years ago this technology wasn't available. Truly, this is a significant advancement."

Key Features of Canary Ambient include:

  1. Real-Time Streaming Audio Processing: Captures live audio from clinical environments and contact centers, allowing for vocal biomarker results to be calculated and made available in real time, during the conversation.
  2. Advanced Diarization: Uses state-of-the-art diarization technology to separate two or more voices into distinct channels, offering clear and accurate recommendations for both parties involved.
  3. Role Identification: Automatically identifies and differentiates between participants, whether a clinician and patient or an agent and customer, resulting in accurate tracking throughout the conversation.
  4. Vocal Biomarker Analysis: Powered by Canary Speech’s proprietary algorithms, Canary Ambient analyzes speech for signs of health conditions such as Anxiety, Depression, MCI, and Alzheimer's. It is being clinically tested with major healthcare institutions in Utah, Japan, Massachusetts and elsewhere for applications involving neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, and Multiple Sclerosis
  5. Customizable Analysis: Provides flexibility to focus biomarker and vulnerability analysis on one or both participants, enabling targeted insights for different use cases.
  6. Seamless Integration with Existing Systems: Easily integrates with healthcare systems, AI-powered tools, and contact center platforms, enabling continuous data flow and real-time feedback.
  7. Immediate Feedback and Insights: Delivers real-time analysis to clinicians and customer service agents, empowering informed decision-making with instant vocal data insights.
  8. Secure and Compliant Data Handling: Ensures all audio data complies with privacy and security standards like HIPAA, HITRUST, and relevant regulations for call centers, safeguarding sensitive information.

Canary's accuracy, which Henry O Connell mentioned as 98%, is allowing early detection of neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington's Disease, Parkinson's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis that can be difficult to diagnose.

Regarding Multiple Sclerosis (MS), O'Connell said it is a difficult disease to diagnose. "There are a lot physiological demonstrations that we are hopeful we can identify early with our technology. When an MS patient presents to a doctor initially, it generally means they've had an episodic event. If that occurs, it usually means there has been neurological damage. If we can diagnose it early, there are at least four existing medications or therapeutics that can prevent the MS patient from ever having an an episodic event."

Canary Ambient is now available for healthcare organizations and contact centers looking to enhance their capabilities through voice-driven insights and improve the data-driven support and efficiency provided to clinicians in determining whether further assessment is necessary.
