Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) will welcome Trish Gorman as the new dean of the Gail Miller School of Business on August 1. She is the first dean to lead the school since its renaming, and she will be entrusted with carrying out the transformative vision set forth by SLCC’s partnership with the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation. A generous gift from the Miller family in October 2022 set this vision in motion.

“Trish is an excellent addition to our leadership here at SLCC and brings a wealth of excellent experience into the role. She joins at a pivotal time and will be essential in ensuring the full vision planned for the Gail Miller School of Business,” said Jason Pickavance, SLCC Provost.

Over the past three decades, Gorman has developed and delivered executive business programs for Columbia Business School, Wharton Business School, London Business School, Duke University, and nearly 100 other corporate and academic entities in more than 20 countries. She was the inaugural director of the Goff Strategic Leadership Center at the University of Utah, and her collegiate teaching experience has included full-time roles at the University of Utah, Columbia University, Wharton Business School, Ohio State, and the University of Connecticut. Gorman served as the director of Global Strategy Learning for McKinsey & Company and, more recently, led North American Growth Thought Leadership at Deloitte as director of eminence. A career highlight was working closely with Jack Welch to build the Jack Welch Management Institute.

“I’m incredibly grateful for this position, and I’m excited to return to Utah where the business environment is dynamic and energized,” said Gorman. “I see a huge opportunity in my new role at SLCC to bring my cumulative experience to help students build confidence and competence, and connect them with employment opportunities here, matching the needs of employers.”

Gorman earned her MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School in Strategy, Not for Profit Management, and Operations Management, building on an undergraduate degree from Northwestern University in Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences.  She earned her PhD from Case Western Reserve in Business Policy & Strategy and Economics. With Jay Barney (Professor of Strategic Management at the Eccles School of Business at The University of Utah), Gorman co-authored the book “What I Didn’t Learn in Business School: How Strategy Works in the Real World” (Harvard Business Press, 2010). She has written for Forbes.com, McKinsey Quarterly, Harvard Business Review, and Deloitte Review, among others.

“Gail Miller’s vision for the business school was a big reason why I was attracted to this position. I’m familiar with her and her work from my time at the University of Utah, and her vision really resonates with the type of work I want to be doing right now,” added Gorman. “That vision is to create opportunities for others and break through barriers.”
