Salt Lake City Community College hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on November 8, celebrating the start of construction for the Larry H. and Gail Miller Business Building at its Taylorsville Redwood Campus.
The Gail Miller Business Building is temporarily closed for remodeling over the next couple of years to accommodate the generous $10 million donation from Gail Miller's family foundation that will underwrite its renovate costs.
Groundbreaking festivities included outstanding speakers, gift bags for VIPs, light refreshments for all guests, a wall to sign a message for the business building, a photo backdrop, and a means to record a video of stakeholders discussing their connection with SLCC's business building and program.
The event featured remarks from SLCC President Dr. Greg Peterson and Dr. Trish Gorman, who serves as the inaugural dean of the Gail Miller Business School. Each of them shared their reflections on the nearly 30-year partnership between the Miller family and SLCC, and their visions for the future of the school.
Dr. Greg Peterson said the school will expand access to higher education, providing opportunities for students who might not have previously considered college possible.
President Peterson also stated the donation will give future generations access to better resources that will give them a better life. “Gail's generosity has opened doors to higher education and a better life for countless students and families across Utah. We are so grateful to Gail and the entire Millennium family, who have partnered with us to educate and train the leaders and workforce of tomorrow.”
The second speaker was Gail Miller herself. She said the new building is "an investment in tomorrow's innovators and leaders. We're building a foundation for students to not only learn valuable business skills, but to also become engaged thoughtful members of our society. We envision a space that goes beyond academics, a place where students can connect, collaborate and take bold steps toward their dreams.”
In addition to the foundation’s donation for the building, Gail Miller announced that the executive team from the Larry H. Miller Company is providing a $10,000 scholarship to a first-generation student from Gail Miller’s alma mater, West High School, to attend the Gail Miller Business School.
The renovated 67,669-sq.-ft. building is anticipated to be completed by Fall Semester 2026. The structure will include high impact spaces including a Business Resource Instruction Center designed to serve more than 13,000 students annually. The Market Street area will provide collaborative workspaces where students can bring entrepreneurial ideas to life. The building will also feature a rooftop event space and a 150-seat auditorium for lectures and speaker series.
The new dean of the business school, Dr. Trish Gorman wrapped up the celebration. “We'll have opportunities to celebrate progress and recognize excellence throughout the building," she exclaimed. "In our day-to-day interactions, as well as in our formal and informal gatherings like today, we'll network, we'll build community, and that will add value for all who participate.”
The Gail Miller Business School was made possible through a generous $10 million donation from the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation last October. It is the largest cash donation the College has received.
This business school building renovation creates an opportunity to have more of a community at SLCC and more connection with one another. In turn, that makes all students feel more valued and welcomed. The new building will be beautiful inside and out and will create beautiful connections along the way. This generosity will be remembered by all. Gail Miller is helping more people than she knows.
