Salt Lake City, Utah – March 18, 2025

The University of Utah today announced a landmark $75 million gift from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation to establish a new 800,000-square-foot hospital and medical campus in West Valley City. This historic expansion will significantly improve health care access for west-side communities.

The gift will fund the university's first off-campus hospital in its 175-year history, along with its largest multi-specialty health clinic. This expansion addresses a critical gap in care—currently, only one in 10 hospital beds serve the 725,000 residents west of I-15.

The new campus is part of an $855 million initiative that extends beyond health care. In addition to delivering hospital and outpatient services, it will create education, training, and research opportunities, while also driving economic growth in the region.

A Legacy of Health Care Advancement

“This transformative investment continues the Eccles family’s extraordinary commitment to expanding medical access and education across Utah,” said Taylor Randall, President of the University of Utah.

“For 60 years, the Eccles family has been a driving force behind Utah’s health care advancements. In 1965, Spencer S. Eccles played a pivotal role in establishing the U’s medical library, and in 1975, George S. Eccles led fundraising efforts for the University of Utah Hospital. Most recently, in 2021, the family made a landmark gift to the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine. We are deeply grateful for their continued leadership in ensuring west-side communities receive the high-quality health care they deserve.”

Expanding Medical Services and Economic Opportunities

Located in Utah’s second-largest city, the new University of Utah health campus will feature:

  • 100 hospital beds
  • Comprehensive outpatient clinics, including heart care, orthopedics, women’s health, pediatrics, internal medicine, and urgent care
  • 200 exam rooms, serving an estimated 341,000 outpatient visits annually
  • Over 2,000 new jobs in the West Valley area

“We are thrilled to partner with the West Valley community to bring top-tier health care closer to home,” said Bob Carter, MD, PhD, CEO of University of Utah Health. “Right now, west-side residents drive over 12 million miles per year to access U of U Health services. This new campus will dramatically reduce those barriers. It will also help address our physician shortage, which is five times worse in western Salt Lake County than in other Wasatch Front communities.”

Addressing Critical Health Disparities

Health challenges in West Valley City highlight the urgent need for expanded care:

  • Life expectancy is nearly 10 years lower than in east-side communities.
  • Heart disease-related deaths occur at almost twice the rate of east-side residents.
  • Diabetes rates are 44% higher.
  • Stroke prevalence is 38% greater.

“As a family and as a Foundation, we are so excited about this project because this community—right here in Salt Lake Valley—has long lacked access to the world-class care they deserve,” said Spencer F. Eccles, Chairman and CEO of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation. “This hospital and health campus will be a hub for exceptional care, education, and career growth, driving economic opportunity and improving lives for years to come.”

A Collaborative Effort

Since the hospital’s initial announcement last year, community members have played a key role in shaping its development, attending numerous stakeholder meetings to provide input.

“West Valley City is growing rapidly and needs expanded hospital and specialty services,” said Mayor Karen Lang. “We are so grateful for this incredible commitment from the University of Utah, the Eccles family, and other donors. These new medical facilities will be a game-changer for our community.”

Opening and Location

Construction is set to begin this summer. The multi-specialty clinic will open in 2028, with the hospital following in 2029.

The 22-acre health campus will be located at 3750 South and 5600 West in West Valley City. Ongoing community engagement efforts will continue throughout the project, ensuring the hospital meets the needs of those it serves.
