Weber County and Qnergy, the leader in pioneering solutions for the distributed methane challenge, have announced a ceremony to formally unveil a strategy to bolster methane mitigation.

A press conference will be held on Thursday, August 15 and will feature remarks from Weber County representatives, state officials, and Qnergy leadership. They will showcase and report on accomplishments to date and also unveil future developments using the innovative Qnergy methane abatement/energy production technology.

Over the past year, the County and Qnergy have begun joint efforts to reduce the county's emissions impacts by abating methane emitted from the county's original and now closed landfill in west Ogden, west of Union Station's rail yard and next to Weber County Archery Park. This joint program has advanced from the pilot project stage to a full-fledged Methane Destruction System that is currently abating more than 95% of methane emissions from the massive landfill.

Methane is harvested from the closed landfill and can be utilized for carbon credits that will both fund the project and generate revenue for the County. As a result, the project will benefit the environment by massively reducing methane from this particular site. Highly flammable methane is the main ingredient in natural gas; its also a potent greenhouse gas and primary contributor to ground-level ozone, a hazardous air pollutant.

“Closed landfills emit methane gas, which is extremely detrimental to the environment,” says Weber County’s economic development director, Stephanie Russell. “We’re taking a landfill that has been closed since 1997 and repurposing it. This project is the first step in creating the largest renewable energy hub in Utah, perhaps in the Western United States, and we’re thrilled to be paving the way with Qnergy.”

Qnergy's methane abatement generator installed at the closed Weber County Landfill in West Ogden. Based on a linear Free Piston Stirling Engine, Qnergy's PowerGen generator harnesses low-grade, otherwise polluting, methane into useful power.

As covered by TechBuzz News, in May of 2024, Qnergy unveiled at Weber County's closed landfill a PowerGen series generator to power an enclosed flare system designed to eliminate methane emissions while at the same time generating useful energy.

“Working with Weber County to see our projects come to fruition has been a pleasure and the support they have shown us in our partnership has enabled the Qnergy team to advance our technology,” says Qnergy’s CEO, Dr. Ory Zik. “This is just the beginning as the opportunity for methane abatement technology is vast and we have Weber County to thank for amplifying our decentralized solutions.”

The press conference will be held on August 15 at 9 a.m. Mountain Time in the Weber Center Commission Chambers at 2380 Washington Blvd., first floor, Ogden, UT 84401. It will include remarks from officials from Weber County and state government. The August 15th conference can also be accessed via Zoom:  https://tinyurl.com/qnergypressconference
